Pre-Conference Workshop

Story and Literature Masterclass

Date: Thursday 9 July 2026

Time: 10.00am - 4.00pm

Location: The University of Notre Dame - Fremantle Campus

Cost: $200 per person


Overview
This full-day masterclass invites participants to engage in a deep exploration of storytelling, creativity, and the power of children’s literature to shape young readers’ identities and imaginations. Facilitated by one of Western Australia’s leading authors/illustrators, the session provides an opportunity for educators, librarians, and literacy advocates to learn directly from a creator whose works have inspired countless children. Dr Ron Gorman will explore the place of story in children’s lives and the policy drivers that support the use of quality children’s literature. 

Across the day, participants will explore the intersection of narrative and illustration and consider practical classroom strategies for using authentic Australian stories to enrich literacy learning. The masterclass will also unpack how story connects to key educational policies and frameworks supporting quality literature in schools and early learning settings.

Accommodation A credit card holding is required to reserve your booking. Please note, payments will be processed from 30 days prior to arrival, with Tax invoices provided upon checkout of your stay. No receipt sent when payment taken. Please note that the accommodation rates are a room only rate. Breakfast is available at an additional rate of $30.00 per person per day if added to the room rate. $36.00 per person if taken on the day - charged on consumption basis. Accommodation rooms may be allocated as a combination of queen or twin (one queen and one single) based on availability at the time of booking. If you require a particular room type please make a note in your booking. Rooms are allocated as queens as standard. Check-in procedures The hotel will require a pre-authorisation on check-in for all individual guests unless a company credit card has been provided for all charges prior to check-in. Should a company credit card be provided, please note the card will be charged for all outstanding amounts on check out. Further, all guests will be required to present a photo ID on check-in. Check-in from 3pm - Check out prior to 11am. Cancellation of Individual Bookings Each room night cancelled will be subject to a cancellation charge equal to the full accommodation component (100%). All cancellations must be received in writing and must be re-confirmed by the Hotel. "No Shows" will be subject to a minimum charge of one night's room charge, to a maximum of all room nights booked, at the contracted rate for the entire stay.
