Everybody’s Story: Investigating Character Diversity in Reading Australia’s Picture Books
Biography
Libby Baker is a teacher-librarian and literacy consultant working in the ACT. Libby is the Reading Australia Fellow for 2025. In her fellowship Libby explored diversity in Reading Australia picture books. Libby has completed a Masters of Education focusing on literacy education and a Masters of Teacher Librarianship through Queensland University of Technology. Libby also completed a Master of Education Research degree through Griffith University, focusing on using Functional Grammar for critical literacy. In her work as a literacy consultant Libby has presented on functional grammar at local, state and national events. Libby is currently the ALEA ACT Vice President.

Biography
Louise is an English and Literacy teacher and experienced school leader in Whole School Literacy, Literacy Intervention, and Academic Performance.
Originally from the United Kingdom, Louise has been working in Western Australian public high schools since 2014, moving into Teacher Education at Edith Cowan University in 2024.
Louise is passionate about improving literacy outcomes for all students and empowering teachers to feel confident to understand how incorporating literacy activities into their teaching can improve their overall subject achievement. She firmly believes that literacy is everyone's business and that often the best outcomes occur outside of the English classroom.

Biography
Jennifer Shand lectures in secondary English curriculum and literacy at the University of Western Australia. Her research interests include disciplinary literacy, the teaching of Literature, writing pedagogy, middle and upper school English curriculum, cross-curricula literacy, and young adult fiction. Jennifer has extensive experience as Senior English teacher and Chief Examiner for Literature.
